Le 40e Olympiade d’échecs (40 édition) s’est tenu du 2002-10-25 au 2002-11-10 à Bled, Slovénie (Hotel Toplice (siège principal) et autres sites à Bled).

Le match s’est soldé par la victoire de Granda Zuniga, Julio E avec 9.5/3 (+9 =1 -2) !

Contexte historique

L’Olympiade de Bled 2002 s’est tenue dans un contexte géopolitique marqué par les séquelles des attentats du 11 septembre 2001 et le début de la guerre en Irak. Les échecs, souvent perçus comme un terrain neutre de confrontation intellectuelle, ont offert une échappatoire symbolique aux tensions internationales. La Slovénie, indépendante depuis seulement une décennie, accueillait pour la première fois une telle compétition, marquant son intégration dans la communauté échiquéenne mondiale. Cette olympiade a également été la dernière à laquelle Garry Kasparov a participé avant son retrait définitif de la compétition en 2005.

Dans une partie d’une intensité exceptionnelle, Ivanchuk démontre sa créativité face au futur champion du monde Topalov. Son sacrifice positionnel au 24e coup force l’abandon de son adversaire après 42 coups d’une lutte acharnée.

Judit brise le mur Kramnik – Ronde 12

Judit Polgar, seule femme parmi les meilleurs joueurs mondiaux, inflige une défaite historique à Kramnik, alors champion du monde en titre. Cette victoire symbolise l’égalité des sexes dans le jeu d’échecs de haut niveau.

Le piège tactique d’Anand – Ronde 13
